Dr. Matthew Kirsten

Dr. Matthew Kirsten-PT, DPT, OCS, TPI-M2

Growing up in Mission Viejo, California, my parents encouraged me to try everything because you never knew what might spark a passion. I played a variety of sports, but ice hockey was always my first love. In high school, I discovered cross country almost by accident, and during my first track season, I found a second passion: pole vaulting.

I went on to study Kinesiology at California State University, Fullerton, where I competed on the track and field team. During my third year, I underwent surgery to repair a torn shoulder labrum. Although rehabilitation was challenging, the experience introduced me to physical therapy. I was amazed by how physical therapists could help people of all ability levels overcome injuries and return to the sports and activities they loved. I knew I had found my calling.

While completing the prerequisites for physical therapy school, I returned to Mission Viejo High School to coach pole vault for three seasons. I was eventually accepted to the University of St. Augustine in San Marcos, California, where I graduated with honors in 2014 with my Doctor of Physical Therapy degree. I then began my career at a clinic in Mission Viejo.

My connection to the community came full circle in 2018 when my wife, Jen, and I purchased our first home next door to my childhood home and began raising our son, Logan. Today, I still enjoy playing ice hockey, running, and golfing, and I remain a sports enthusiast who loves watching just about any form of competition. These days, I also enjoy helping my son explore new activities of his own.

I take pride in continually learning and developing my skills to provide the best possible care. My certifications include Myofascial Decompression, Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization, Blood Flow Restriction Training, and Titleist Performance Institute Level 2 Medical Professional. In 2026, I became a Board-Certified Specialist in Orthopaedic Physical Therapy.

At The Movement Schopp, I value the opportunity to spend quality time with my clients and combine my clinical expertise with my personal experience as an athlete. My goal is to help each person return to the activities they love with confidence.
